Year 7 Foreign Language Choice

There is increasingly more evidence that employers are looking for competence in languages in today’s globalised world.  As you already know, we are able to offer all year 8 pupils at Latymer the opportunity to learn a second language in addition to the one they have already begun. Those studying French in Year 7 can choose from Russian, German or Latin. Those studying German can choose from Russian, French or Latin. The time-allocation for languages in Years 8 and 9 is, at present, as follows:

Year 8: 7 lessons per cycle of their 1st language 9 lessons per cycle of their 2nd language

Year 9: 7 lessons per cycle of their 1st language 8 lessons per cycle of their 2nd language

The additional time for the second language is to enable pupils to work at a faster rate and to achieve within two years what would otherwise require three. There will be two groups for each language and all pupils will study two languages until the end of Year 9.

During Year 9 all pupils will choose which subjects they will study during Years 10 and 11. All our pupils will continue with at least one Modern Foreign language from French, German or Russian.  Please note, therefore, that a decision to take Latin in year 8 is already a commitment to your child’s current foreign language as a GCSE subject.
