  • The PE Department at Latymer aims to provide an enjoyable, accessible and broad programme of study, which will enable students to develop physically and socially and encourages positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. The Department consists of five full-time PE Specialists, all of whom teach across the full age and ability range; this is complemented by several other staff that assist with the many extra-curricular activities offered at Latymer.

    We look to promote the following key concepts:-

    1. Fitness and health for positive living
    2. Social and moral education
    3. Skill development "know-how" and "know-what"
    4. Expressive and creative development
    5. To prepare for future education and leisure
    6. To promote participation and enjoyment amongst all pupils

    The school is well resourced and values the importance of Physical Education. It has extensive playing fields, outdoor courts, a gymnasium, sports hall, fitness suite, PE specific classroom and recently renovated changing facilities. These facilities provide a wonderful opportunity to offer a wide ranging curricular and extra-curricular programme.

  • At Key Stage 3 pupils have three 80 minute Physical Education lessons over a two week cycle. All lessons are double periods and class sizes are approximately 23 pupils to a group. Pupils are taught in ability sets and where possible classes are taught single sex. Boys and girls follow similar units of work in; athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, dance, football, gymnastics, handball, health-related fitness, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, tennis, volleyball and House Sport. The school has a very well developed House system in which House Sports competitions take place during lessons and all pupils compete in a range of activities. Pupils will have the opportunity to compete in the following sports: badminton, basketball, bleep test, circuit training, cross country, dodgeball, football, handball, hockey, lacrosse, netball, table tennis, tag rugby and volleyball. A highlight of the school calendar is Sports Day, which is run in the summer term and involves the whole school. Activities include; athletics, rounders, tennis and tug of war.

  • At Key Stage 4 pupils have two 80 minute Non Examination Physical Education lessons over a two week cycle. All lessons are double periods and class sizes are approximately 23 pupils to a group. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups and classes can be mixed and single sex according to the activity. In addition to KS3 activities pupils can participate in more diverse activities including aerobics, boxercise, lacrosse, trampolining, table tennis and zumba. We also run a Sports Leaders Level 1 Award where pupils learn how to plan and deliver coaching sessions to local Primary schools. The school offers pupils the opportunity to take Physical Education as an examination subject at GCSE level, in addition to Non Examination PE. We follow the OCR examining board PE specification which consists of:

    • 50% Practical Coursework
    • 10% Written Coursework
    • 40% Examination

    Pupils continue to take part in House Sport and Sports Day with all activities taking place during PE lessons. Pupils will get the opportunity to compete in: athletics, badminton, basketball, dodgeball, football rounders, table tennis, tennis and tug of war.

  • Which topics does the course cover? We follow the AQA examining board PE specification. There are seven distinct sections:

    • Applied anatomy and physiology you will develop knowledge and understanding of the human musculo-skeletal, cardio-respiratory and neuro-muscular systems and the use of energy systems during different types of physical activity and sport.
    • Skill acquisition you will focus on how skill is acquired and the principles required to optimise learning of new, and the development of existing skills.
    • Sport and society you will develop knowledge and understanding of the interaction between, and the evolution of, sport and society.
    • Exercise physiology you will look at the adaptations to the body systems through training or lifestyle, and how these changes affect the efficiency of those systems.
    • Biomechanics you will develop knowledge and understanding of motion and forces, and their relevance to performance in physical activity and sport. You will use biomechanical definitions, equations, formulae and units of measurement and demonstrate the ability to plot, label and interpret biomechanical graphs and diagrams.
    • Sport psychology you will focus on the impact of psychological factors on performance and develop knowledge and understanding of the role of sport psychology in optimising performance in physical activity and sport.
    • Technology in sport you will develop knowledge and understanding of the technological developments in physical activity and sport.

    What skills will be taught? The obvious suggestion is to say that the course will prepare pupils for a sports-related career. Examples:

    • Sports Biomechanics
    • Sports technology development
    • Biomedicine/Movement science
    • Nutrition
    • Sports economics/business/tourism
    • Rehabilitation/physiotherapy
    • Psychology/therapy
    • Performance analysis/statistics
    • Sport and fitness coaching/teaching/officiating
    • Sports administration/management/marketing and media.

    However, the real benefit of the course is that it enables you to grasp a wide range of skills – from scientific research through to discussions on the socio-historical impact of sport in culture and allows you to utilise your sporting abilities in gaining valuable UCAS points. It merges together a number of different disciplines and can act as a good balance to, or enrich the understanding of a number of other subjects. It also develops an organised well rounded student that can cope with the demands of University life and due to the practical and theoretical skills required, and will offer a stand out combination for University applications.

    Coursework? AS PE

    • 70% - 2hr written paper
    • 30% - Practical assessment in one sport.
      A2 PE
    • 35% - Paper 1: 2hr written paper
    • 35% - Paper 2: 2hr written paper
    • 30% - Practical assessment in one sport.

    At AS Level pupils are assessed in one chosen activity which is the same at A2 Level. The practical activity profiles are listed. If your sport is not listed it can be requested to be added.

    The non-exam assessment (NEA) aspect of the qualification requires students to develop their ability and aptitude in physical activity, demonstrating appropriate skills and techniques outlined below.

    This aspect of the specification requires students to:

    • Perform a range of skills and techniques in physical activity and sport (Advanced skills for A2)
    • Make decisions, implement strategies, tactics and/or compositional ideas, and apply knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations while performing physical activity and sport (Advanced skills for A2)
    • Apply knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, principles and methods to physical activity and performance
    • Evaluate performance in physical activity and sport, applying relevant knowledge and understanding.

    There are two aspects to the NEA:

    • Performance assessment (practical performance)
    • Performance analysis assessment (analysis and evaluation).

    What are the entry requirements? Anyone who achieves the minimum school entrance requirements can choose A Level PE. It is possible for students who have not studied GCSE PE to do A Level PE; it will benefit you to demonstrate a strong interest in one or more sports. Is the course taught by one teacher? The course will consist of 14 lessons over a two week cycle and be taught by three PE teachers specialising in one of the following topics:

    • Anatomy and Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics
    • Sports Psychology and the Acquisition of skill
    • Sport in Society and Sports Technology; Practical performance and Analysing your Own Sports Performance

    Is there an optional section or choice available in any part of the course?

    • You can choice the practical activity that you wish to be assessed in.
    • The coursework can be either all written or part written and part oral assessment.
  • Latymer takes part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and participation across the whole school is actively encouraged. The programme includes morning, lunchtime and after school practices and fixtures and has an extensive fixture list on Saturdays. Girls and boys follow a similar programme and activities include: athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cross country, dance, fitness suite, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, table tennis, tennis, volleyball.

    We have a history of producing strong teams in football and cricket (boys and girls), rugby, and netball. Teams participate in a range of County and Borough Cups and Leagues.

    Every two years the department runs a Senior Sports Tour to Barbados to play cricket, football and netball and a Junior Sports Tour to Cyprus to play football. The department is very experienced in organising these trips and they are very popular with pupils and providing them with an opportunity to play some excellent international teams and experience different cultures.
