  • Sociology A level students follow the AQA syllabus (1191/2191). Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of contemporary social processes and social changes. They will be able to critically evaluate a variety of theories, debates and concepts in relation to these topics, and will be able to make connections between topics. They will learn how to communicate this knowledge and understanding in a clear and effective manner.

The course will enable students to demonstrate a wide range and great depth of knowledge and understanding, as well as highly developed skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation. Throughout the course students will be encouraged to develop critical and reflective thinking with respect for social diversity as well as developing their own sociological awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world.

Students are given some practical opportunities to design/carry out research in order to supplement their understanding of the strengths and limitations of various research methods such as Observation and Questionnaires. This is particularly important in the absence of coursework. A highlight of the year is attendance at the annual Criminology Conference for A Level students held in November in central London. Students both run and participate in the school's Sociology Society which runs weekly and which is open to all Latymer students.
