First thing on Monday morning, Year 8 enjoyed an action-packed, interactive presentation from Chris Bradford, bestselling author of Young Samurai and Bodyguard series. http://www.chrisbradford.co.uk/

Chris believes in "method writing". He trained as a Samurai swordsman and then as a professional bodyguard to ensure that his books are authentic. He learned that the stereotype of a burly male bodyguard is not correct. Bodyguards can be any gender and build. Awareness and preparedness are as important as physical defence skills. A crucial element is the ability to blend in. This inspired Chris to write a series of action thrillers about teenage bodyguards involved in exciting and dangerous international missions. He read extracts from his books and then formed a bodyguard "team" to "protect" him from a pre-planted "threat" as he moved around the room. We found that it's not as easy as it looks.

Chris then told us about his Young Samurai series. This is about the adventures of Jack Fletcher, and is set in medieval Japan. Chris showed the students both training and real Samurai swords. After the talk, students were able to buy personally signed books and posters.

Later, Chris talked to a group of Year 7 students in the Library. He talked about why he feels it is important to write equally strong male and female characters, and he shared more details of his Samurai training. Great news is that there is a new, ninth book, The Return of the Warrior, in the series later this year!

Students said they enjoyed watching and taking part in Chris Bradford's presentation, and lots of them are now reading the books.

Chris described the visit as "A stunning start to my tour" and complimented Latymer students' engagement and knowledge of his books. Thank you to English department, Year team, teachers and IT support and APFLS for their assistance arranging this author visit.
