Joan Edwards

Joan Edwards, teacher of German from 1960-1986

I am very sorry to announce the death of Joan Edwards, former Head of German, on 11th April 2018. She passed away peacefully in her sleep after an illness of a few days. Joan grew up in Bishop Auckland in Co. Durham and taught briefly in Devon before coming to Latymer in September 1960. She was appointed Head of German in 1967 and remained here until her retirement in 1986. Joan was instrumental in establishing the link with our German exchange school Heisenbeg Gymnasium in Gladbeck, something which continues today. A former pupil who has since made her life in Germany commented “My life would have taken a very different turn had Joan not inspired me with her love of the German language, culture and people”. Joan threw herself into school life during those 26 years and enjoyed extra-curricular activities including trips to Cwm, helping backstage during school plays, supporting Senior Choir and running literary and debating societies. She was Senior House Mistress for Dolbé for many years. Joan remained, even in retirement, a loyal and devoted Latymerian and a regular visitor to school events and functions. Latymer was her family. She maintained contact with around a hundred former pupils who we hope to reach out to now. Anyone who would like to receive details of the funeral, once available, should contact me on losa@latymer.co.uk
