Harry Potter A History Of Magic

As a joint collaboration between the English Department and the Library, we organised a trip to take students from the Year 8 book club, and those who helped out the English Department at the open evening, to the ‘Harry Potter: A History of Magic’ exhibition at the British Library. The trip was a great success.

As we entered the exhibition, beneath a ceiling of flying textbooks, we were transported to a magical world, with early examples of witches’ cauldrons, bezoar stones and even a ‘real’ mermaid from 18th century Japan (In reality the mummified body of a monkey and a fish). The students enjoyed learning about how much of the Magical folklore we know of now, originated from genuine explorations in Science, such as Alchemy, Herbology and Astronomy. The students got to see some fantastic examples of early texts on the subjects - some dating back as early as the 4th century - as well as some original drafts of J.K. Rowling’s writing and sketches – a particularly interesting piece, was a redacted chapter from the original draft.

It was a lovely day out – There was so much to see and our one desire was that we were in possession of Hermione’s time-turner, that we could go back and look around the exhibition one more time!
