Photography Society enables students to tap into their more creative side, exploring both the technical and conceptual aspects of photography. So far we've looked at composition, colour, perspective and lighting, encouraging students to take a more considered approach to their photography. They say that a picture paints a thousand words, and although we prefer to use a slightly less messy medium, we do try to give our photos meaning - we've done a workshop on stop-motion movie making, allowing students to think about the purpose behind a photo and the message that it tries to convey in addition to the ordinary aesthetic considerations.
From learning about the essence of calculus to the mysteries shrouded in Pi, Maths Society is a place reserved for those who aren't simply satisfied with the final answer. Come to Room 54 at 12:50 on Fridays to experience the first SINE of greatness!
In Art Society we do various activities that aim to help students improve their art skill, as well as have some fun and gain other skills that they can explore further if they wish. It is run by two sixth form art students who share the load, alternating weeks that they run the society meetings. There is an overall theme/ skill that we target each week and one of us makes a presentation which includes artists showing different techniques and takes on the subject to help students gain inspiration and develop their own ideas, basic instructions in the form of just writing that they read or a video and then an overall task that students can do if they want to. However, if someone wants to do something different they're free to talk to the sixth formers who will help them with that. In the past we have done sessions on stop-motion animation with Plasticine, still life, the anatomy of the face, exploring different materials (e.g. charcoal, felt tips, fine liner) and splatter painting. We encourage an enthusiastic approach to all activities and students have a lot of fun each week as well as learning new skills that they could use in their art lessons if they wish. In the future we're planning to do more multiple-session activities such making comics (we would teach the students about character design, story boarding and more), leaf tracing and pop art. Overall, we just want it to be a place where people can get excited about art and have a good time.
