The Arts at Latymer

In 2007 Latymer was awarded Specialist School Status in the Arts, specifically Art, Media and Drama. Prior to this, Latymer already had a reputation for exceptional standards in Music and Drama performance. The Junior and Senior School plays are major annual events for the school, and rarely will a week pass by where there isn’t a music performance to enjoy, from the Chamber Concerts, to Music at Latymer evenings, the Orchestral Concert, the Christmas Concert, the Carol Service, Carol Singing in Trafalgar Square, and the A level Music Recitals. Whilst this continues today, it is because of the extra funding that specialist status offered, that we were able to widen the scope of the Arts at Latymer and invest in long term Art, Media and Drama projects which students continue to benefit from today. Latymer’s long-term commitment to the role of the Arts in a well-balanced and diverse curriculum and to an extensive Arts enrichment programme is illustrated by the decision to continue to invest in these subject areas, long after the government withdrew the requirement for funding to be ring-fenced for specialism. Over the years, we have updated and improved the technology, resources and equipment available in Art, Media and Drama, and regularly invite external practitioners and industry professionals into school to share their skills and experiences with our students. The Arts Team also run Arts themed annual year group trips for Years 7 to 9; each year all Year 7 pupils will visit the Tate Modern, Year 8 will visit the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour and Exhibition, and Year 9 students will experience a theatre workshop and a West End show. The Arts academic year is rounded off with the Year 7 Arts Days, where Year 7 pupils participate in day long practical and creative workshops in Art, Media or Drama. Our multi-purpose Arts Studio provides a versatile working space and cutting edge technology which is used throughout the academic year for performances, exhibitions, film making, photography work and film screenings, and it is also an excellent space for lectures, assemblies, meetings and so on. The Arts staff and students also enjoy working collaboratively with the local community on a variety of Arts related projects. Below are some photo slideshows of various Arts related activities, grouped for your convenience under Arts Events, Arts Trips and Arts Workshops. We have also included the Hollywood Trip video, a Sixth Form trip that is open to all year 12 and 13 students, and runs every two years. The final category offers an insight into the Arts facilities and resources we have at our disposal, to the benefit of Arts students across the age range.
